Beijing steps up crackdown on medical insurance fund crimes
Beijing police have intensified their crackdown on crimes involving medical insurance funds since the beginning of 2025, including fraud and the illegal resale of recycled prescription drugs, the capital's Public Security Bureau said on Wednesday.
So far, police citywide have solved over 70 such cases and detained more than 400 suspects, according to the bureau.
The bureau emphasized that the medical insurance fund is the people's "life-saving money", adding that, in a continued effort to safeguard public health and fund security, police have been working closely with market regulation and healthcare authorities to improve the efficiency and quality of case handling.
In one case, police received a tip from the city's healthcare security bureau about a community-based elderly care station suspected of colluding with medical institutions to fraudulently bill the insurance fund for unnecessary or falsified drug prescriptions.
Police quickly formed a joint task force with relevant departments to investigate and arrested more than 20 suspects on Nov 14, 2025. The case remains under further investigation.
In another case, police dismantled an illegal operation in December 2025 led by a suspect surnamed Nie. The group was allegedly involved in the black-market resale of prescription drugs purchased using medical insurance funds. The case is also still under investigation.
The bureau pledged to step up efforts to combat insurance-related crimes, strengthen joint enforcement, and enhance legal education for the public, in a continued effort to protect the vital interests of the public.
