The inaugural Showcase of Outstanding Repertories by China Theatre Plum Blossom award-winning artists concluded in Shanghai on May 31, marking a significant step in bringing Chinese opera to global audiences and establishing a new platform for international cultural exchange.

Held from May 21 to 31, the event brought together some of China's most celebrated theatre artists and showcased acclaimed productions spanning eight major traditional Chinese opera genres, including Peking Opera, Kunqu Opera, Yueju Opera, Yuju Opera, and Huangmeixi Opera.

The showcase featured 10 nationally recognized productions, including The Female Prime Minister, Cheng Ying Rescues the Orphan, and Su Dongpo. Sixteen winners of the prestigious China Theatre Plum Blossom Award, the country's highest honor for stage performers, took part, representing three generations of theater artists.

Organizers, including the China Theatre Association and the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, said the event attracted strong public interest, with an average theater occupancy rate of 98.5 percent. A total of 19 staged performances were presented alongside three opera flash mobs in commercial districts, 12 public outreach events in schools and communities, and an international theater roundtable.

Beyond the stage, the showcase sought to expand the reach of traditional Chinese performing arts through international dialogue and cultural exchange. Theater professionals, scholars and arts administrators from more than 40 countries and regions, including France, New Zealand and Singapore, attended performances and participated in discussions on the international promotion of Chinese theater.

Organizers also announced that three productions, The Peony Pavilion, The Female Prime Minister and Three Times Beating Baigujing, have secured overseas touring plans, reflecting growing international interest in traditional Chinese opera and its distinctive artistic traditions.

A comprehensive media campaign further amplified the event's impact. According to organizers, online exposure exceeded 100 million views across domestic and international platforms. Video clips and performance highlights were distributed through overseas social media channels, reaching international theater communities and Chinese diaspora audiences worldwide.

More than four decades after the establishment of the Plum Blossom Award, this was the first event dedicated specifically to international recognition.

The organizers also confirmed that the showcase will become a permanent fixture in Shanghai and will be held every two years.

Organizers said future editions will continue to expand the range of participating genres, support young talent and deepen international collaboration through touring productions, artist exchanges and joint creative projects.

As China seeks to enhance global cultural exchange, the success of the inaugural showcase demonstrates how traditional opera, rooted in centuries of history yet resonant with universal human emotions, can serve as a powerful bridge between cultures.
