China has slammed Prague's decision to end its sister-city agreement with Beijing on Wednesday, viewing the move as a breach of faith.

A spokesperson for the Chinese embassy in the Czech Republic said the Prague city council unilaterally decided to cancel a partnership agreement with Beijing and submitted to the city assembly for review, undermining China and the Czech Republic's relationship and local cooperation.

The council voted on Monday to cancel the partnership agreement after it failed to remove an article requiring its commitment to the one-China principle and stating Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory, Reuters reported.

Beijing's municipal government has lodged stern representation with the Prague city, the spokesperson said in an online statement, stressing the one-China principle is the basis and premise for China to carry out foreign exchanges and cooperation.

China urged the Prague city government to correct its mistake and return to the right track promoting the development of bilateral relations, otherwise damage will be done to their own interests, according to the statement.

The Czech Republic government has always stuck to the one-China principle, and China would like to continue promoting bilateral cooperation at all levels including local exchanges, it said.

Beijing and Prague signed an agreement in 2016 to establish sister-city ties.
