A central government spokesman has strongly condemned and protested against the US Senate's passage of legislation known as the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act of 2019 on Tuesday.

The passage of the act interfered in the internal affairs of China and went against international law and the standards of international relations, Yang Guang, spokesman for the State Council's Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office, said on Wednesday, adding that it openly supported protesters and radicals in Hong Kong and completely exposed the hegemonic nature of some politicians in the United States and their intention to hold back the development of China.

Yang said continuing violent crimes in Hong Kong had trampled on the rule of law and social order and severely damaged the special administrative region's prosperity and stability. Those crimes challenged the base line of the "one country, two systems" principle, he said.

The biggest risk that Hong Kong faces is rampaging violence, not threats to its "human rights" or "democracy", Yang said.

Some US politicians confused right and wrong and held double standards with no principles, Yang added.

He said the Chinese government is determined to safeguard its sovereignty, implement the "one country, two systems" principle and oppose interference by any other forces in Hong Kong affairs.

The pace of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation is unstoppable, Yang said, noting that Hong Kong will be prosperous and stable in the long term under the strong support of the Chinese mainland and that Hong Kong people's lawful rights and freedoms will be guaranteed.

"Some US politicians should stop interfering in Hong Kong affairs immediately, so as not to smash their own feet by lifting rocks and harm others without benefiting themselves," Yang said.
