Do teachers have the right to discipline students?

I think teachers should be allowed to discipline children in class to maintain an environment conducive to learning. Here the word “discipline” is not a synonym for “punishment”. Teachers discipline children to lead them into what is believed to be correct thinking and action, not to punish.
