The United States handling of the undersea collision of its nuclear submarine is unprofessional and opaque. Given that the US has a tradition of accusing others of not being professional and transparent, the US' handling of the incident shows its double standards, said Zhang Junshe, a military researcher at a seminar on Oct 27.

More than three weeks have passed since the nuclear-powered submarine USS Connecticut, collided with an "unknown object" in the Indo-Pacific, and the US military still has not released basic information on the accident that is a big concern of China and many other countries in the region, said Zhang.

Zhang said the US has to reveal reveal the truth of the collision. "What was USS Connecticut up to do in the South China Sea? What mission was it performing? Was there a nuclear leak that created nuclear contamination in the marine environment?" Zhang asked.

"Given the safety of navigation and fishery production, as well as the environment protection, the international community has the right to demand that the US reveals the truth as soon as possible," said Zhang.

The seminar was held by China Daily Op-Ed department and China Daily website, with a theme on US Indo-Pacific strategy's impact on China's neighboring security.
