China announced on Thursday countermeasures against US congressman Michael McCaul, which took effect on the same day.

In recent years, McCaul, chairman of the United States' House Committee on Foreign Affairs, has frequently made remarks and taken actions that interfere with China's internal affairs and damage the country's interests, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Last week, McCaul led a bipartisan congressional delegation to Taiwan and met with Taiwan leader Tsai Ing-wen, which the statement said violated the one-China principle and the three China-US joint communiques.

The visit also seriously undermined China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and sent wrong signals to "Taiwan independence "forces, the statement added.

In accordance with China's Anti-Foreign Sanctions Law, Beijing will freeze all assets of McCaul in China, and prohibit any organization or individual within China from engaging with him, and he will be banned from obtaining visas or entry to China, the ministry said.
