Visiting China for a two-week seminar on Chinese language and culture under the South-South Cooperation training program, organized by Beijing International Chinese College, was nothing short of a transformative experience. My journey was marked by a mix of excitement, curiosity and high expectations, all of which were exceeded by the end of the trip. The seminar provided a perfect blend of education, cultural immersion and sightseeing, leaving me with lasting impressions of China's beauty, history and progress.

One of the first things I was told about China was how splendid the autumn season is, and as I stepped out of the airport, I could feel the crisp, cool air envelop me. It was a refreshing welcome and an immediate confirmation of the autumn's reputation. The colorful foliage lining the streets of Beijing, with shades of red, orange and yellow, painted a picturesque scene that I would come to admire throughout my stay. Coupled with the meticulously designed structures at major roundabouts and junctions, the city's aesthetic was both modern and harmonious with nature.

Exploring Beijing, I was struck by the prevalence of electric cars and buses. This innovation not only demonstrated China's commitment to clean energy but also made the air remarkably fresh for such a bustling metropolis. It was inspiring to see the practical integration of sustainability into daily life. Among the culinary highlights, I indulged in iconic dishes like Peking duck and hotpot, which offered a sensory journey through the rich flavors of Chinese cuisine. The tea culture, too, was a revelation, showcasing the artistry and tradition deeply rooted in the Chinese way of life.

The seminar was enriching, with participants from seven countries — Albania, Panama, Jamaica, Laos, Trinidad and Tobago, Brazil, and Nigeria — fostering global camaraderie. Topics covered included Chinese history, foreign policies, and paper-cutting, taught by experienced educators. Engaging in wushu (martial arts), learning paper-cutting, and exploring Chinese characters were memorable experiences that deepened my appreciation for the culture.

Our visits to iconic landmarks such as the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, and the Temple of Heaven revealed the depth of China's historical and cultural heritage. Standing atop the Great Wall, a marvel of engineering and human perseverance, I felt connected to a legacy that has withstood the test of time. The Forbidden City, with its intricate architecture and imperial history, was a testament to the grandeur of China's dynastic eras. The Temple of Heaven, a place of ancient rituals, exuded a sense of tranquility and reverence that resonated with me deeply.

The program included visits to Peking University, the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, and the Institute of South-South Cooperation and Development, providing insights into China's advancements in education, commerce and cultural exchange. A memorable moment was visiting the Donglang Film and Television Cultural Industry Park, showcasing the blend of tradition and innovation in the arts.

The adventure continued in Hangzhou, a city renowned for its natural beauty and cultural significance. Watching the sunset at West Lake was an unforgettable experience. The serene waters, framed by lush greenery, created a postcard-perfect setting that seemed almost surreal. Visiting Hangzhou Wangxingji Fan Industry Co Ltd allowed us to explore the meticulous craft of traditional Chinese fan-making, highlighting the dedication and artistry involved in preserving intangible cultural heritage. At the Zhejiang Merchants Museum, I gained a deeper understanding of the region's history and entrepreneurial spirit, while our interaction with the faculty at Zhejiang International Studies University offered valuable perspectives on talent development and international cooperation.

Throughout my time in China, I was struck by the warmth and hospitality of the people. Their openness and eagerness to share their culture created an inviting atmosphere that made every interaction meaningful. The seminar, beyond its educational objectives, provided a platform for cross-cultural dialogue and mutual learning, reinforcing the importance of global partnerships in fostering development.

In conclusion, my two weeks in China combined education and exploration. The seminar on Chinese language and culture opened my eyes to a country that blends tradition with modernity. From stunning landscapes and historical sites to its innovative policies, China left a lasting impression on me. This experience highlighted the importance of learning from China's growth and applying those lessons elsewhere. It was an unforgettable journey that enriched my understanding of the world.
