A multimedia performance combining light shows and symphonic music commemorated the 80th anniversary of victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1931-45) and the World Anti-Fascist War at Shanghai's historic Sihang Warehouse Memorial on Wednesday.

The battle-scarred western wall of Sihang Warehouse, a landmark in Jing'an district that gained prominence during the 1937 Battle of Shanghai, served as a canvas for projections chronicling China's 14-year resistance against Japanese aggression.

"Sihang Warehouse stands as one of Shanghai's most significant resistance war landmarks and a vital patriotic education base," said Gu Haibin, deputy director of the publicity department of Jing'an district. "The immersive projection experience allows visitors to connect with this crucial period in history."

"Through this fusion of light and melody, we honor our heroes and preserve their legacy, ensuring that future generations remember history, cherish the sacrifices of martyrs, and safeguard peace," Gu added.

The visual display, designed by Shanghai Media Group's Motion Magic, employed 16 ultra-high-definition projectors to achieve near-8K resolution. Zhang Zhe, the creative director, explained, "We deliberately chose the western wall, integrating projection technology with its historic battle scars to create a powerful visual narrative."

The performance unfolded in three chapters: the war's outbreak, the resistance, and the final victory and peace. The Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra provided live accompaniment, performing selected pieces including Ode to the Red Flag, excerpts from Railway Guerrilla, and movements from the Yellow River piano concerto.

"Ode to the Red Flag carries special meaning as its composer, Lu Qiming, is a longtime Jing'an resident," Gu noted. "The predecessor of Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra was also based in our district."

The event drew over 200 attendees, including war veterans, relatives of martyrs, local residents, and youth representatives.

The commemoration was jointly organized by Jing'an district's publicity department, landscaping and city appearance administrative bureau, and culture and tourism bureau.

This multimedia performance is part of the district's series of commemorative activities including themed exhibitions, lectures, study tours, and memorial ceremonies.
