Shanghai embraces paperless travel

Shanghai's transportation network has undergone a quiet digital transformation in recent years, adopting paperless systems that make travel far more convenient.

By replacing traditional tickets and documents with electronic data, the city now enables passengers to move through its public transit system with a smartphone or a valid ID.

As paper-based monthly passes for buses and ferries fade into history, Shanghai's payment options have become increasingly diverse.

Alongside cash and physical transportation cards, passengers can now pay through the Shanghai Public Transportation QR Code, mobile transportation cards, and the Suishenma QR code, making travel more flexible and efficient.

Air: A major shift is underway in China's aviation sector. Since Oct 1, paper flight itineraries have been fully replaced by electronic itineraries for domestic routes.

Rail: China's national railway system has also completed its move toward paperless reimbursement. Since Oct 1, electronic invoices have entirely replaced paper vouchers for train tickets. Passengers can obtain an e-invoice via the Railway 12306 app or at station service windows and self-service machines within 180 days after the trip ends.

Streamlined processes

Shanghai's airports are streamlining the passenger process.

Pudong International Airport: Terminal 2 has introduced an International Self-Service Zone at Island C, featuring self-check-in kiosks and self-bag-drop counters. This facility currently serves passengers of Emirates, Singapore Airlines, All Nippon Airways, and Thai Airways, allowing passengers to complete check-in and baggage tagging independently and significantly reducing wait times.

Hongqiao International Airport: The airport now supports electronic boarding passes for international flights. Travelers can use a mobile QR code for a fully paperless journey through immigration, security, and boarding, depending on airline service availability.

Hongqiao Airport has further streamlined the experience of international travelers with its "smart channels". Inbound passengers can complete health declarations, pet declarations, and luggage item declarations through a customs mini-program, ensuring a smoother, contactless entry experience.
