The African Union has hailed Guinea's recent presidential election as a significant step toward restoring constitutional order, praising the peaceful vote while encouraging dialogue, institutional reforms and a review of sanctions against the country.

While congratulating President-elect Mamady Doumbouya on his victory, the chairperson of the African Union, Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, called for a reassessment of sanctions imposed on Guinea.

He praised the "maturity" of the Guinean people, noting that the vote was conducted peacefully and calmly, demonstrating a strong sense of citizen ownership of the electoral process.

"The Chairperson of the Commission reiterates his full commitment and that of the African Union to continue providing support to the Republic of Guinea for a swift return to constitutional order, the consolidation of democracy and the rule of law, and the strengthening of national unity, peace and stability, which are essential for sustainable development in the country," the statement said.

He also commended national stakeholders — including election management bodies, candidates, political parties and coalitions, the government and civil society organizations — as well as technical and financial partners, for their leadership and support, which he said contributed to elections conducted in line with international standards and Guinea's national legal framework.

This follows the Guinea Supreme Court's validation on Sunday of an overwhelming presidential election victory by President Mamady Doumbouya on Dec 28, according to provisional results released by the General Directorate of Elections.
