China urged the European Union on Wednesday to stop the abuse of unilateral trade tools after the bloc launched an investigation into a Chinese clean energy company, vowing to firmly safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese companies.

The European Commission has launched an in-depth investigation into Chinese wind turbine maker Goldwind Science & Technology for allegedly "being granted foreign subsidies that distort the internal market".

Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said the EU's discriminatory and restrictive measures against Chinese enterprises send a protectionist message, damage the image of the EU and undermine the confidence of Chinese companies investing in Europe.

Lin urged the EU to honor its commitment to market openness and fair competition, and provide a fair, transparent and nondiscriminatory business environment for companies from around the world.
