The China National Peking Opera Company will debut a new, innovative work titled Spring·Autumn, an artistic journey through the changing seasons of the year, inspired by classical Chinese poetry and the rhythms of traditional Peking Opera. This production, which marks a significant creative milestone for the company, will premiere on May 1 at Mei Lanfang Theatre in Beijing.

Spring·Autumn takes as its framework the flow of the four seasons, following the course of the 24 solar terms in Chinese calendar. The performance will begin with the awakening of early spring and the melting of lingering snow, setting the stage for the unfolding of nature's seasonal changes. The piece will evoke the dynamic, ever-changing landscapes of nature, all while incorporating the rhythm and progression of the Chinese year as it reflects the beauty of the natural world.

One of the highlights is its fusion of Chinese classical poetry with the rich, elegant melodies of Peking Opera. The production draws deeply from the ancient traditions of Chinese poetry, with its subtle ink-and-brush imagery, and intertwines it with the refined vocal techniques and stylized movements of Peking Opera. The result is a poetic masterpiece that captures the intersection of the natural world and human cultural heritage, offering a sensory journey that is as much about visual and aural beauty as it is about evoking deep reflections on the passage of time.

On the vocal side, top-tier performers of the company, such as Tian Lei, Wang Yue, and Du Zhe, alongside young talents, will lend their voices to the production.

The musical arrangement will feature skilled young instrumentalists, whose mastery of traditional Chinese instruments will further enhance the texture of the music, creating a deep connection between the audience and the landscape of the piece.

By showcasing the passage of time through a carefully crafted combination of music, poetry, and stage design, Spring·Autumn will be a reflection of the richness of China's cultural legacy, while also pushing the boundaries of how Peking Opera can evolve and resonate with contemporary audiences.

According to Wang Yong, president of the China National Peking Opera Company, besides this new production, the company will premiere its newly adapted Red Letter from The Peony Pavilion by Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) playwright Tang Xianzu, this year.

In May, the company will also participate in the China-Brazil Cultural Year series of performances, including a multicity tour in Brazil. This initiative will use Peking Opera as a bridge to share Chinese culture and stories with international audiences, while furthering the global reach of China's traditional performing arts.
