China expressed firm opposition on Wednesday over a "democracy summit" in Copenhagen that invited "Taiwan independence" forces to deliver irresponsible remarks, urging relevant sides to abide by the one-China principle and stop offering stages for such forces.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun made the remarks after Taiwan leader Lai Ching-te delivered via video message at the so-called "democracy summit" held in Copenhagen on Tuesday, which Guo characterized as being filled with ideological biases.

Taiwan is a part of China, it has never been a country and will never be a country, Guo stressed.

Under the guise of so-called democracy and in defiance of the mainstream public opinion in Taiwan for peaceful development of cross-Strait ties, Lai and his kind have been peddling "Taiwan independence" separatism and spreading false narratives, Guo said.

Such moves are aimed at sowing discord between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait, which once again expose their reckless, provocative and stubborn stance of pursuing "Taiwan independence", he said.

Whatever Lai says and does will not change the fact that Taiwan is a part of China, evidenced by both history and law, nor will it ever undermine the commitment of the international community to the one-China principle, he added.
