Chinese tech company Honor demonstrated the future of mobile imaging with its innovative "Robot Phone" at the China Night of the 79th Cannes Film Festival on Thursday. The company also announced that the device will be officially launched in the third quarter of this year.

The move comes as Honor cements its position as one of the fastest-growing smartphone brands globally. According to the latest report released by UK-based market research firm Omdia, Honor recorded a 19 percent year-on-year growth in the first quarter of 2026, making it the fastest-growing brand among the world's top 10 smartphone vendors.

As the only official imaging partner for the China Night of the Cannes Film Festival this year, the Robot Phone showcase marks the latest move in Honor's mission to popularize professional-level imaging. Guests at the event experienced firsthand the device's embodied artificial intelligence capabilities for visual expression.

The innovative gadget features a fold-out, robotic camera arm equipped with a 200-megapixel sensor. Powered by advanced AI, it can autonomously track subjects, stabilize video footage, while analyzing emotions and body language to respond conversationally to its environment, according to Honor.

Notably, the upcoming Honor Robot Phone will feature the first results of a strategic technical collaboration between Honor and ARRI, the Germany-based world-renowned designer and manufacturer of professional camera technology for cinematic storytelling.

For more than a century, ARRI has helped shape how cinematic stories are told — from the early days of film to today's most advanced digital camera systems, a commitment recognized through 20 scientific and technical awards from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

"Today, consumer smartphones have already become a serious tool in professional filmmaking, being used on blockbusters across the globe. That's why we believe it is time to bring these worlds even closer together," said David Bermbach, managing director at ARRI. "For the first time ever, core elements of ARRI Image Science are being integrated directly into a consumer device."

By uniting Honor's advanced mobile imaging capabilities with ARRI's century-long heritage in defining cinematic image quality, the collaboration reflects a shared ambition to unlock new creative possibilities and extend cinematic standards from high-end filmmaking to the next generation of content creators.

The China Night event, themed "From Tradition to Tomorrow", gathered artists and innovators to explore the future of filmmaking.

Meanwhile, Chinese cinema has also taken center stage at this year's festival, with classics such as Farewell My Concubine and new works like Turin Shadow drawing significant attention.

French business daily Les Echos said the breakthrough innovation of the Robot Phone has drawn admiration from renowned directors and celebrities.

According to Omdia, global smartphone shipments reached 298.5 million units in the first quarter of 2026, a 1 percent year-on-year increase, outperforming early expectations.

Overseas markets have become a core growth engine for Honor, with shipments in the Middle East and Africa doubling compared to the same period last year, Omdia added.

Having surpassed 50 percent of sales from overseas markets in 2025 for the first time, Honor is now pivoting to fully focus on its AI-powered device ecosystem in 2026. With the Robot Phone's upcoming launch, the brand is poised to empower a new generation of creators — blending technology ingenuity with cinematic artistry.
