Chinese FM welcomes Liberia as new member of mediation organization
Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Tuesday welcomed Liberia as the newest member of the International Organization for Mediation, or IOMed, during a meeting with visiting Liberian Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti in Beijing.
Established in October last year and headquartered in Hong Kong, IOMed is the world's first intergovernmental organization dedicated to mediation. To date, it boasts 43 signatory states.
During the talks, Wang said China is ready to strengthen coordination with Liberia in multilateral affairs to prevent the world from sliding back into an era ruled by the law of the jungle.
Noting that the international landscape is undergoing profound turbulence and transformation, Wang said multilateralism is facing severe headwinds amid a rise in power politics and bullying.
As both China and Liberia are representatives of the Global South on the United Nations Security Council, Wang affirmed that China fully supports Liberia in fulfilling its responsibilities as a non-permanent member of the council.
He expressed China's willingness to work with Liberia to reinvigorate and strengthen the UN, uphold the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, and safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of the Global South.
Wang also expressed China's appreciation for Liberia's adherence to the one-China principle, noting that the country stands ready to advance cooperation with the West African nation in trade, agriculture and areas related to people's livelihoods, while deepening exchanges in culture, youth, sports and human resources.
Highlighting China's zero-tariff policy for all African countries having diplomatic ties with China, Wang said China will work with Liberia to turn the policy into greater trade opportunities, enhance trade facilitation between the two countries and across China-Africa trade, and unlock more potential for mutually beneficial cooperation.
Nyanti reaffirmed that Liberia firmly adheres to the one-China principle, respects China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and has confirmed this position through domestic legislation.
She expressed sincere gratitude for China's long-term support for Liberia's national development, saying Liberia is willing to learn from China's experience in poverty reduction.
Liberia highly values and firmly supports the vision of building a community with a shared future for humanity and China-proposed global initiatives, Nyanti said.
