A coastal village of flowers, faith and sea winds

Updated: 2026-05-14 | China Bound
Visitors wearing zanhua, or flower hairpins, pose for a photo in front of an oyster-shell house in the ancient fishing village of Xunpu in Quanzhou, Fujian province, on March 6. More than 30 journalists and influencers from China and abroad experienced the tradition during a tour that day. Recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage in 2008, the age-old practice has become a popular tourism activity. See story, page 4 CHEN YI/FOR CHINA DAILY

In Xunpu village, just southeast of Quanzhou’s city center, the rhythm of the sea and centuries-old traditions still shape daily life. Along its winding stone lanes, Xunpu women wearing vibrant zanhua floral headdresses create one of the village’s most unforgettable sights. Made with fresh blossoms such as Arabian jasmine and magnolia, these intricate crowns are more than adornments — they are living symbols of local identity and heritage.

You can step into small studios in the village to experience the art of zanhua firsthand, learning how flowers are carefully pinned into elaborate hairstyles. Nearby, the Mazu temples dedicated to the sea goddess reveal the spiritual heart of this fishing community, where prayers for protection and safe voyages remain deeply woven into everyday life.

Who will fall in love here?
Ideal for: Cultural enthusiasts, photography aficionados, history buffs, and slow-travel seekers craving authentic everyday magic.
Not for: Those seeking luxury or ultra-modern infrastructure.

When to embrace the bloom?
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the best seasons to visit Xunpu. With its subtropical maritime climate, the village enjoys mild weather year-round, while spring and autumn offer especially pleasant temperatures of around 20-28 C, ideal for strolling through the coastal lanes and taking photos.

Spring is particularly enchanting, as jasmine, mock orange, and other seasonal blossoms burst into bloom. These fresh flowers are woven into the iconic zanhua floral headdresses worn by Xunpu women, making it the perfect time to experience the village’s celebrated “garden on the head” tradition in its most vibrant form.

Signature experiences
1. Craft your own zanhua – the art of pinning a colorful floral accessory headdress: Learn to pin jasmine or magnolia blossoms into stunning headdresses.
2. Whisper of Mazu: Visit the revered sea goddess temples adorned with vivid flowers to understand fisherwomen's spiritual life.
3. Eyes and ears on tradition: Stroll through the stone alleyways as knives rhythmically shuck oysters and time slows.
4. Photo memorable: Don traditional garb, flaunt a zanhua crown, and snap a bit of eternal beauty.

Before making your itinerary
Avoid peak times if you're not a fan of bustling crowds (summer sees up to 20,000 visitors daily). Though the village offers its scenic charm year-round, most activities demand interaction, attention, and reverence.
