China calls for comprehensive ceasefire in Middle East
China called on Monday for a comprehensive and lasting ceasefire in the Middle East and expressed its readiness to play a constructive role in facilitating peace talks, following reports that the United States and Iran appear to be close to an agreement to end the war in the Middle East.
Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said China urges all parties to strive for an immediate comprehensive and lasting ceasefire and to restore peace and stability in the Middle East and the Gulf region at the earliest possible time.
Finding a solution is in the interest of both the US and Iran, as well as countries in the region and the whole world, she added.
The spokeswoman emphasized the need to consolidate the momentum of de-escalation, adhere to the general direction of a political settlement, and reach a solution that accommodates the concerns of all parties through dialogue and consultation.
"China will continue to provide greater support for peace talks and play a constructive role in ultimately achieving lasting peace in the Middle East," she said.
