Heavy rains prompt transportation, tourism closures in Chongqing
In response to recent persistent heavy rainfall in Southwest China's Chongqing, several tourist attractions have announced temporary closures to ensure visitor safety amid rising water levels and landslides.
Over the weekend, devastating rainstorms struck parts of the municipality. As of 3:30 pm on Monday, local authorities reported nine deaths and 11 people missing in Yongchuan district, and another two people missing in Beibei district.
On Sunday, Moon Lake Park and the Tea Mountain Bamboo Sea National Forest Park in Yongchuan announced the closure of their sites due to severe overflow in several waterways and landslides, effective on Sunday morning. The scenic area was particularly affected.
In Beibei, the Jindaoxia Scenic Area suspended operations for safety inspections on Sunday.
On Sunday night, the Yunyang Longgang Scenic Area in Yunyang county announced its closure effective Monday.
Moreover, several transportation services were suspended on Sunday, including the Jialing River ferry, Jinyun Mountain cableway, Chengjiang ferry, and Xinbeiquan sightseeing elevator.
Beibei authorities reported on Sunday that the continuous heavy rain rapidly raised the Jialing River's water level, making safe docking at Chengjiang Ferry Terminal impossible and posing significant risks for cableway and elevator operations.
Earlier on Monday, the Chongqing Municipal Planning and Natural Resources Observatory and the Chongqing Meteorological Observatory issued the municipality's first red alert for geological disaster risk this year. It said from 8 am on Monday to 8 am on Tuesday, Fengjie and Wushan counties are under a Level-I (red alert) warning, with five townships and 41 villages and communities identified as having a very high risk of geological disasters.
