Tianjin's Binhai New Area drives city's green transition
Tianjin's Binhai New Area has evolved from a coastal industrial zone into a modern, low-carbon hub driving the city's high-quality development, with green transition and integrated port-industry-city growth as its core strengths, local officials said.
Lian Maojun, secretary of the Binhai New Area Party Committee, said that in 2025, the area's GDP hit 789.1 billion yuan ($116.2 billion), ranking second among national-level new areas. It has drawn over 2,300 investment projects from 247 Global 500 firms, with foreign trade exceeding 610 billion yuan last year.
Green and smart port operations have become a highlight of Binhai's transformation. Tianjin Port features the world's first fully automated, zero-carbon container terminal powered entirely by renewable energy. Its annual new energy generation reaches 350 million kWh, covering 70 percent of the port's operational power demand. Around 2,000 hydrogen heavy-duty trucks are in operation, forming one of China's largest hydrogen logistics demonstration zones.
"Goods shipped from Dongjiang Port meet high environmental standards and are widely recognized in European eco-conscious markets," said Wang Bao, secretary of the Party Committee of Tianjin Port Electric Power Company.
State Grid Tianjin Electric Power has underpinned the district's robust low-carbon transformation. By the end of 2025, Tianjin's installed new energy capacity surpassed 14.84 million kilowatts, accounting for 44.59 percent of the city's total power capacity and overtaking coal-fired power as the largest power source.
State Grid Tianjin has rolled out a "four-synchronization" mechanism in Binhai to advance power grid planning and new energy integration. The Fuxin 220-kilovolt substation, Tianjin's first large-scale new energy hub, supports 1.9 million kilowatts of renewable energy capacity in the district.
"We are embracing global green transition, upgrading low-carbon power grids, fostering green and smart supply chains, and facilitating international green cooperation for local enterprises," said Shan Dapeng, manager of the company's dual carbon operation management branch.
