Imagine strolling through Beijing Olympic Forest Park and unexpectedly spotting Grogu — the beloved alien infant from the Star Wars universe, who belongs to the same species as Jedi Master Yoda — sitting in a stroller. For many fans, the surreal sight was a scene from a galaxy far, far away.

The appearance was part of a movie-themed gathering organized under China Film Group Corporation's new initiative, "A Handshake Across the Screen", which aims to revive enthusiasm for cinemas by extending the moviegoing experience beyond the theater into interactive experiences. Combining an outdoor fan event at the park with a special screening at a downtown CINITY cinema, the activity transformed a conventional film release into a social event for movie lovers.

Held on May 23, one day after the Chinese mainland release of Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu, the event highlighted the enduring appeal of the nearly five-decade-old sci-fi franchise in China.

Although the latest installment has yet to challenge the box-office dominance of Dear You — a low-budget domestic drama about Chaoshan immigrants from Guangdong province — Star Wars continues to command a devoted following among Chinese audiences.

That enthusiasm was evident throughout the event, as families joined longtime fans dressed in themed costumes to immerse themselves in the Star Wars universe.

For many participants, the gathering was about more than simply watching a movie; it became an opportunity to share memories, friendships and a sense of community built around a cultural phenomenon.

The immersive atmosphere extended into the cinema. Members of the 501st Legion — the internationally known fan-led cosplay group inspired by the imperial stormtroopers — marched into the theater in full armor as the iconic Imperial March played. Later, several fans took the stage to recount how the franchise had shaped their lives, from forming lifelong friendships to strengthening bonds between parents and children.

Organizers said the event reflects a broader effort to combine film intellectual properties with tourism, exhibitions and social interactions, turning moviegoing into a more participatory and immersive cultural experience.
