On May 28, the Beijing International Bookstore hosted a promotional event for Chinese mystery and suspense writers.

Co-organized by the China Writers Association and the China International Book Trading Corporation, the event themed "Mystery Narratives and the Enigma of Human Nature" featured writer presentations, dialogues and video connections.

Following the previous event for Chinese sci-fi writers, the gathering aimed to highlight achievements in the Chinese genre literature and foster international exchanges and cooperation. Participants included industry professionals, writers, publishers, translators, scholars, and media representatives from over 20 countries.

Mystery and suspense writers featured in the event include Lyu Zheng, Huyan Yun, Zhao Jingyi, A Yi, Cai Jun, Zijin Chen, Shi Chen and Guo Peiwen.

In the mystery and suspense segment, Xie Gang, founder of Midnight Library, China's first mystery imprint, reviewed the 20-year evolution of Chinese mystery literature, noting its growth from a niche market to a mature genre. He emphasized that Chinese mystery novels blend local stories with global suspense narratives that explore human nature and society.

He Jiahong, honorary president of the Beijing Detective and Mystery Fiction Association, noted that mystery novels should address social realities and human complexities, drawing from his legal and literary experience.

Chinese mystery and suspense literature is shaped by traditional Chinese gong'an (legal) narratives and enriched by global mystery literature. Through this blend, it has developed a unique style that merges Chinese cultural elements with a universal appeal, said scholar Zhang Yifei from Beijing Normal University.

Douglas Preston, a best-selling author from the United States, said in a video message that Chinese suspense novels are gaining popularity in Europe and America by blending unique cultural elements with well-developed storytelling. He believes there's significant potential for these works to grow internationally, and the American market is eager to welcome more talented Chinese mystery writers and their books into the English-speaking world.

Tom Chalmers, executive director of Legend Press in the UK, highlighted the large global market for thriller, mystery and suspense literature. He noted that British readers are particularly enthusiastic about psychological thrillers and unsolved mysteries. He observed that Chinese mystery literature is capturing the attention of international publishers, and he hopes to help bring more Chinese works to English-speaking audiences worldwide.
