Crayfish craze fuels Changsha summer economy

Mid-May marks the peak season for crayfish in Changsha, Central China's Hunan province, when locally sourced crayfish are at their most flavorful and succulent.

According to ByteDance's Douyin Life Services, group-buying orders for Changsha's crayfish rose by 20 percent year-on-year in May, while online transaction value increased by 26 percent.

As one of China's best-known food capitals, Changsha has turned crayfish into a signature summer attraction, fueling the city's night economy and strengthening the integration of culture and tourism.

Douyin Life Services recently launched a themed "Crayfish Season" campaign, partnering with cities known for their crayfish dishes, including Changsha, Wuhan in Hubei province and Chengdu in Sichuan province, to spark a nationwide crayfish consumption craze.

During the campaign, the platform released a crayfish flavor map, popular restaurant rankings and dining guides to help consumers make informed choices while boosting business for crayfish restaurants.

Users aged 31 to 40 account for the largest share in the search and consumption of crayfish in Changsha on the platform, while those aged 24 to 30 also demonstrate strong demand.

The younger generation and parent-child families are major consumers. Crayfish dining is particularly popular for evening gatherings, with 6 pm to midnight considered the peak consumption period.

Rising consumer demand has driven rapid expansion on the supply side. The number of crayfish merchants in Changsha joining Douyin Life Services for promotion has increased by 51 percent year-on-year this year, making digital operations a new growth channel for local restaurants.

The crayfish boom has also helped drive tourism growth in Changsha. In May, transaction volumes for local accommodation, sightseeing and entertainment services rose sharply, forming an integrated one-stop summer consumption model that combines crayfish dining with travel and lodging experiences.

In terms of flavors, local crayfish dishes strike a balance between tradition and innovation. Local specialties such as spicy crayfish and oil-braised crayfish remain highly popular, while classic flavors like garlic cater to a wide range of consumers. The crayfish peak season also coincides with Changsha's tourism high season, creating a strong synergy between food and travel.
