China unveils top 10 eco-environmental science achievements for 2025
China unveiled the country's top 10 ecological and environmental science and technology achievements for 2025 to mark World Environment Day on Friday, showcasing breakthroughs in low-carbon energy, pollution control and ecosystem restoration.
The list, released by the China Association for Science and Technology's Alliance for Ecological and Environmental Sciences and Industry, features advances such as climate-resilient strategies for global wind and solar power systems, the impacts of climate change on lake ecosystems, nondestructive remote-sensing technology and equipment for monitoring grassland biodiversity, and the formation mechanisms and prevention strategies for heat wave-ozone compound extreme events.
Other projects cover soil acidity mitigation in southern China, forest biodiversity conservation, hydroclimatic risks in energy systems, nutrient-carbon interactions in alpine grasslands, advanced urban wastewater nitrogen removal, and thorium-based nuclear fuel utilization.
The annual selection is in its seventh year.
Wang Jinnan, president of the alliance and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, said the achievements condense the wisdom and hard work of scientific and technological workers.
"These achievements not only serve the nation's priorities but also underscore China's commitment and sense of responsibility in advancing sustainable development on the global stage," he said.
Wang said the achievements demonstrate major breakthroughs in frontier green and low-carbon technologies, coordinated multi-pollutant control, ecological restoration and carbon sink enhancement.
Wang Qian, officer in charge and head of the United Nations Environment Programme China Office, said the top 10 achievements not only represent the latest heights of China's ecological and environmental technology, but also demonstrate its systematic and comprehensive capability to solve complex environmental problems.
"It is hoped that these outstanding technological advances can accelerate their pace of going global," she said.
