Eastward expansion to strengthen regional development
By Bian Yi (China Daily)Updated: 2006-12-29 11:33 Authorities in Changsha, capital of Central China's Hunan Province, are planning for urban expansion to the east, seeking to build a modern industrial base called Dadongcheng.
"The eastward expansion is seen as a key move to lift regional integration between Changsha and its neighbouring cities, Zhuzhou and Xiangtan," said Wen Shuxun, head of the Administrative Committee of the Changsha Economic and Technological Development Zone.
"Infrastructure construction and economic growth in Dadongcheng are expected to spur development of Zhuzhou and Xiangtan," Wen said, adding that the boom of neighbouring economies will in turn benefit Changsha.
Covering a total area of 200 square kilometres, Dadongcheng includes a number of industrial parks and development zones. Changsha Economic and Technological Development Zone is one of them.
As a key part of Dadongcheng, the development zone is focused on engineering machinery, automobile manufacturing and electronic information.
The authorities of the development zone have strengthened efforts in securing investment and extending industrial chains, in a bid to help reduce costs and increase capabilities against market risks, Wen said.
Meanwhile, the authorities are also stepping up efforts to optimize industrial structure, Wen added.
High value-added service industries, such as logistics, finance, information,
business conference and exhibition, which are mainly targeted at producers, have
thus received support from local governments.
