Caofeidian, located offshore to the south of Tangshan, Hebei Province, was a belt-like alluvial sandy isle formed more than 5,000 years ago. But now the constructors of Caofeidian are staging the biggest project of reclaiming land from the sea in the history of China, which is the initial stage of a huge-scale development.

Caofeidian has a deep trough on the seaside and avast shoal on the landside, and the depth of the water is 25 meters at 500 meters off the isle, and the depth of the nearby trough is 36 meters. It is the only site along the Bohai Sea coast for the construction of 300,000-tonnage terminals without the need for channel and basin excavation.

The infrastructure construction in Caofeidian started as early as in 2003. At present, the facilities for water and power supply, transportation and telecommunications in Caofeidian are improving day by day.

At present, the construction of Caofeidian is entering into a new stage of developing mainstay industries to bring along the overall development. The 250,000-ton ore terminal was open to both domestic and international navigation. The construction of the crude oil and coal terminals is now underway and will be finished by the end of 2007 and in June 2008 respectively. The construction of the Shougang Jingtang Iron and Steel Corp was started officially on March 12 of this year and will turn out 4.85 million tons of steel products in 2008.

An industrial system based on a recycling economy is to be established with the modern harbor logistics, iron and steel, petrochemical and equipment manufacture sectors as the mainstays, and the power, seawater desalination, building materials, environmental protection and other associated industries playing supporting roles. A coordinated development of the information, financing, trade and commerce, tourism and other service sectors can also be expected.
