China considers phasing out incandescent lamps
By Li Jing (chinadaily.com.cn)
Updated: 2008-12-25 16:59 China will gradually phase out incandescent lamps and promote green lighting in a move to realize its energy-saving goals, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) said on its website on Dec 25. Cooperating with the UN Development Program and the Global Environment Facility, the NDRC, China's top economic planner, has begun to compiling plans to phase out incandescent lamps in the country. China is one of the top producers and consumers of lighting products in the world. In 2007, China produced 4.44 billion incandescent lamps, or one third of the world's total, among which 2.98 billion were exported. China also produced 3 billion compact fluorescent lamps in 2007, or 80 percent of the world's total, of which 2.2 billion were exported. In China, lighting currently accounts for 12 percent of the country's electricity consumption. Using energy-efficient lamps can cut consumption by 60 to 80 percent. Every year, a total of 48 billion kWh of electricity, an amount equivalent to Tianjin's total electricity consumption in 2007, can be saved if all of China's incandescent lamps are replaced by energy-efficient lamps.
