Candy set for global comeback after milk scandal

SHANGHAI: White Rabbit Creamy Candy should be back on sale around the world by the end of the year, despite its global recall last month due to the tainted milk scandal, its manufacturer said Wednesday.

"The candy will likely return this year or early next year," Weng Mao, general manager of Guan Sheng Yuan Food, said.

"But the exact date depends on further negotiations with the affected countries and regions and relevant departments."

Weng said the candy will go back on sale domestically today.

The firm recalled its candy last month after Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand said it was tainted with melamine. It later announced the suspension of all domestic sales.

Last week, the firm said it had resumed production using melamine-free powdered milk.

"Following a double inspection procedure the milk was found to be perfectly safe, and complied with national health standards," Weng said.

All of the new packets of the candy will carry a green sign and have the word "qualified" printed on them, indicating they were made using safe powered milk, he said.

"That is the first step for White Rabbit on its return to the market," he said.
