Japan's green companies thriving in China

As pollution levels soar across China, authorities are introducing stricter measures in hopes of rolling back the toxic tide. The push to clean up the country's air, land and water has provided new opportunities for those in the green technology business.

Japan's Asahi Glass, one of the world's major glassmakers, is looking to cash in on going green. One example of its innovations is the external material used in Beijing's iconic Water Cube. It is a special elastic material -- ETFE film which can enclose a large space and is very lightweight. It's a cheaper alternative to glass, making it ideal for modern stadiums, buildings, farms and vehicles.

According to Shimbo Takashi, executive officer of the company, Asahi Glass is looking to contribute to China's green campaign and take a bigger share of the Chinese market. When it comes to the application of the technology to vehicles, Takashi says, "Automotive side glass can protect your skin. 99% of the UV rays are cut. We got the certificate from the US skin cancer foundation. It can protect your skin. Also we can cut the air outside, it's very comfortable, we can cool down a room's temperature."

Asahi Glass is showcasing its latest green products in Hangzhou. Lighter, stronger, and better heat insulation are the products' main selling points.

China's central government announced an ambitious 5 billion yuan plan to curb pollution. Analysts say it's a good time for businesses to switch their focus to green products.
