Radio fined HK$140,000 for 'Harass Most' show

Hong Kong Commercial Radio received a fine of 140,000 Hong Kong dollars
(US$17,500) today from Hong Kong's Broadcast Authority for an improper radio
show, Chinese New Service reported.
The authority has ordered the radio station to broadcast an apology that will
be read by a senior administrator from the station. They are required to
broadcast the apology once on three of their channels during prime hours, the
authority said.
As well, the commercial radio station has to hand in a report on the
remediation measures to clear-up the negative influence caused by the improper
radio show, within three months from today. This is the second time that the
radio received fines from the authority.
The radio show launched an online vote for "The Hong Kong Actress I Want to
Harass Most" at midnight of June 3. It also provided a list of 20 famous
actresses and gave listeners a week to vote.
The program encountered fierce protest and criticism instantly. A grassroots
women association said the program severely insulted women's dignity and
advocated improper values.
Hong Kong's Broadcasting Authority has reportedly received 189 complaints
about this issue.
Though the program's producer and DJ have been suspended from their duties
and the name of the radio show has been changed, the consequences of their
actions have severely impacts, explained the authority.
Any radio program involving sexual discrimination, improper ideology or found
influencing people to violate the law are illegal, said Joseph W. P. Wong,
Secretary of Commerce, Industry and Technology.
