China files WTO complaint over EU duties on shoes

GENEVA: China filed a complaint to the World Trade Organization (WTO) on Thursday over the European Union (EU)'s decision to extend antidumping duties on Chinese-made shoes.
"The anti-dumping investigations and the findings made by the EU violated various obligations under the WTO, and consequently caused damage to the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese exporters," the Chinese WTO mission said in a statement.
China's Ministry of Commerce Thursday also urged the EU to take seriously China's strong concerns and properly resolve the dispute over shoe tariffs through consultation at an early date, said a statement posed on the ministry's website.
Under WTO's dispute settlement procedures, after an official complaint was filed, the EU and China will have 60 days to try to find a solution to their dispute through consultations. If consultations fail, China can ask for a WTO expert panel to investigate and rule on the dispute.
