Man gets death penalty for drug trafficking

CHANGCHUN - One man was sentenced to death and another was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve for drug trafficking crime by a court in Northeast China's Jilin province on Wednesday.

Weng Tanggen was sentenced to death for possession of illegal drugs and drug paraphernalia, as well as for selling illegal drugs.

Police seized more than 10,000 pills of "magu," 757 grams of "magu" powder and equipment for manufacturing the drugs from a house rented by Weng.

"Magu" is a Thai word for an illegal stimulant made by combining methamphetamine, or "ice," and caffeine.

Wang Jianping, who was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve, was found to be hiding 5,912 "magu" pills and 265 grams of "ice" in his apartment in Changchun, Jilin's capital.

The court heard that Weng, who carried more than 14,000 "magu" pills from Wuhan, the capital city of Central China's Hubei province, to Changchun, sold the pills to Wang at a price of 43 yuan ($6.6) each. Weng used the money to purchase a car to carry the drugs and sell them in other locations.

Seven other people who bought drugs from Wang were sentenced to jail terms of one and a half to 15 years.

Chinese police cracked 89,000 drug-related cases last year, apprehending 101,000 suspects.
