KATHMANDU - Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, on a visit to Nepal on Saturday, met with Nepalese President Ram Baran Yadav to discuss relations and cooperation between their two countries.

During the meeting, Wen called China and Nepal neighbors with traditional friendship.

He said that with a 1,000-year history of exchanges between the two peoples, China and Nepal have helped and supported each other since they established diplomatic relations in August 1955, and that bilateral relations have enjoyed a stable and healthy development.

The Chinese government and people cherish the traditional China-Nepal friendship and are pleased to see the achievements made by the Nepalese in their national construction, said Wen, adding he believes Nepal will be able to complete the country's peace and constitutional development process at an early date and realize durable stability and development in the country.

Wen said that as the international situation is undergoing profound and complex changes, Asian countries are facing rare opportunities for development while challenges to them are unprecedented.

China is willing to keep high-level communication with Nepal, deepen political mutual trust, extend mutually beneficial cooperation and push forward cooperation in key areas such as hydroelectricity exploitation and transportation infrastructure construction, Wen said.

Wen said China supports Nepal in developing friendly relations with neighboring countries, and that both sides should closely cooperate and coordinate in regional and international affairs so as to improve regional stability and development.

Speaking on the same occasion, Yadav said the time-honored Nepal-China relations are based on the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, mutual trust and mutually beneficial cooperation, which have yielded fruitful results.

He added that Wen's visit has lifted the development of bilateral relations to a new level.

The Nepalese government and people appreciate China's adherence to the principle of non-interference in other countries' internal affairs and its support for Nepal, said Yadav.

He said his country will continue to follow the one-China policy and is willing to intensify communication and coordination with China, so as to deepen their friendly cooperation in all areas.
