ALS Ice Bucket challenge catches on in China

By ZHENG JINRAN (chinadaily.com.cn) Updated: 2014-08-19 21:21

Terry Gou, founder of Foxconn, the world's largest electronics contractor manufacturer, took the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge on Tuesday.

He then nominated three celebrities, including model Lin Chi-ling, to take the challenge.

The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, which recently went viral across the United States, is dedicated to raising awareness of combating Lou Gehrig's disease. Those who get a bucket of ice dumped on their heads are asked to donate to the ALS Association.

Several Chinese celebrities and employees in China's high-tech industry have taken the challenge.

Liu Zuohu, founder of One Plus, a tech company in Beijing, took the challenge on Sunday. Since then, Lei Jun, founder of Xiaomi Technology Co, and Ji Shisan, CEO of Guokr.com, have accepted the challenge and donated to the ALS Association or the China-Dolls Care and Support Association, which helps patients with osteogenesis imperfecta, a condition that causes extremely fragile bones.

Actor Andy Lau from Hong Kong also took the challenge on Tuesday.

People who took the challenge are required to post their videos on social media and nominate others to do the same. Those who refuse to take the challenge are asked to make a donation to the ALS charity of their choice.

The China-Dolls Care and Support Association said on its official Weibo account that they have received around 40,000 yuan ($6,500) as of 11 pm on Monday.
