Myanmar's Information Ministry has granted The Associated Press permission to open an office in Yangon. Japanese broadcaster NHK has also been granted permission.

Before this, China's Xinhua News Agency and Guangming Daily were the only foreign news outlets allowed to have their nationals as resident correspondents.

Now several dozen journalists are working in Myanmar for various international news outlets.

Six multiformat journalists will staff the new AP bureau.
