In spite of the negative impact of SARS, the city of Guangzhou, capital of south China's Guangdong Province, registered record high industrial output in May, according to figures issued Saturday by the local statistical bureau.

Guangzhou registered 39.1 billion yuan (US$4.7 billion) in industrial output value in May, a 25.4 percent year-on-year rise.

The city's figure for April was 23.9 percent, 7.6 percentage points higher than its March figure.

For the period from January to May of this year, local industrial added value totaled 47.1 billion yuan (US$5.67 billion), a rise of 18.4 percent year-on-year.

This increase led to a year-on-year 13.8 percent growth rate in local gross domestic product during the five month period.
