A granny seeks divorce after husband's sex change
A granny in southwest China's Sichuan Province, aged over 80, is in the news when she applies to divorce her husband. Her reason is: her husband covertly changed his gender and the most basic criteria for a marriage no longer exists.
The grandma Huang, living in Chengdu, has been married for 60 years. She can never believe that her husband would become a woman one day, but reality that her marital partner has undergone a sex change operation and would prefer to be called a "sister." She was shocked, she had to make a decision, and she decides to seek a divorce.
According to Chengdu Daily, Huang was not informed before the sex change operation, nor her husband's intention to change gender. This change was too much for her to accept, but she still tried to hide this and to maintain their "marriage," for the sake of their grown-up children.
At first, Huang, despite of the unexpected change and her grievance, still tried to maintain a peaceful relationship with this new "sister." But her "husband" even changed the gender in the identity card and often harassed her, these forced her to make a decision -- divorce.
Huang, supported by her daughter, went to the city's Chengbei Law Firm to seek legal advice and decided to apply for a divorce.
Ren Zhongjian, a lawyer from the firm, said that Huang has a legal ground to divorce.
According to China's Marriage Law, Ren explained, a couple must be of different genders. In Huang's case, the "couple" is of the same gender, and he believed that the court would surely rule to grant her a divorce. |
