Rooney denies nightclub assault
Police are investigating claims that England striker Wayne Rooney assaulted a taunting fan in a nightclub brawl, it was confirmed on Tuesday night.
It is alleged that the 19-year-old hit a 22-year-old student at Tiger Tiger bar, in Manchester's city centre, when the man confronted him about his controversial move from Everton last year. The star's manager has denied the claims and said Rooney did not respond to the taunts. A spokesman for Rooney said: ``Wayne was approached by a man he had never met in a menacing and threatening manner. "At no stage did Wayne respond. The man was immediately asked to leave the nightclub in the company of security guards." Rooney had been in the bar with team-mates Rio Ferdinand, Wes Brown and Roy Carroll when the confrontation took place. It is claimed that the man screamed at the player, calling him "treacherous" and shouted"once a blue, always a blue", in reference to his former Everton career.
Greater Manchester police have confirmed a man has made a formal complaint following the incident at 1am on Tuesday morning. "A formal complaint of assault has been made and inquiries are beginning," said a police spokesman. "At this stage it is too early to say if we will need to interview the man involved." Staff at the trendy Tiger Tiger venue, in Manchester's Printworks development, have refused to comment on the incident.
