Chinese President Hu Jintao met in Jakarta Saturday with Kofi Annan, secretary-general of the United Nations, and exchanged views with him on issues of common concerns.

Hu Jintao and Annan were in Jakarta attending the Asian-African Summit, which wrapped up yesterday after endorsing a statement declaring the establishment of a strategic partnership between the two continents.

Hu and Annan both praised the summit as a success, saying the conference demonstrated unity between Asia and Africa, and is one with far-reaching historical significance.

The UN secretary-general briefed Hu about his UN reform plan and hopes China will give him support.

Hu praised the UN as having played an indispensable role in maintaining world peace and promoting common development as well as in international affairs.

"We advocate that the UN should play an even greater role in international affairs, and support the efforts of the UN secretary- general in multi-lateral areas and in strengthening the role of the UN," Hu said.

The Chinese president said China agrees that UN reform should be carried out toward the orient of enhancing the authority of the UN so that UN can better play its role in world affairs.

The UN secretary-general's reform plan covered a wide-range of areas including development, disarmament, anti-nuclear proliferation, the criteria to use military forces, and reform of the UN Security Council.

Hu said Annan's comprehensive report submitted for review at the September summit has included many practical and important proposals and China is making serious study of the proposals while listening to views of other members.

Annan's proposal on development has won support from the developing countries. Hu said China supports a bigger representativeness of the developing countries at the Security Council when increasing the seats of the council.

The Chinese president stressed that the reform of the Security Council is of great significance and involves interests of all sides. Therefore, he said, it is natural there are disputes on the reform.

He urged more discussions and consultations in the face of disputes so that a general consensus can be reached.
