China to impose control in junior events
China will introduce doping controls at all national junior sports events from next year in an effort to curb the increasing use of banned substances among youngsters.
Wang Baoliang, a top official at the State Sports Administration of China, made the announcement at a national anti-doping conference held in Beijing on Wednesday. According to the official, more and more school students are turning to drugs to help them earn high marks in examinations such as college entrance exam. A survey on about 4,500 middle school and college students in 14 Chinese cities, conducted by the Beijing University of Sports Culture, showed the percentage of positive cases was higher than that among professional athletes. Wang said the State Sports Administration would use a combination of education and sanctions to discourage the use of drugs amongst young sports people. "Whoever uses banned drugs will receive due punishment," said Wang.
