“Nick” 作為 “the precise moment”的意思最早出現(xiàn)于16世紀(jì)70年代，據(jù)說(shuō)在16世紀(jì)后半葉得以廣泛應(yīng)用；到17世紀(jì)書(shū)面材料中出現(xiàn)了nick of time這個(gè)詞組。
“In the nick of time”的比喻義至今還很常用，意思是 “just in time; at the necessary moment” (正是時(shí)候，在緊要關(guān)頭）, 例如 “I saw the baby was about to fall off and caught it just in the nick of time.” （我見(jiàn)這嬰兒快要掉下去，便及時(shí)把它抓住了。） “Nick of time”的這種用法最早只用nick一個(gè)單詞來(lái)表達(dá)就可以了，這可能是源于“nick”這個(gè)字的原意: “a nick” 不是“a large hole，or a scrape，or anything else that is diffuse”, 而是“a small，sharp，indentation whose exact location is clear”, 因此nick就逐漸有了“the precise (moment)”的意思了。
如今，nick作為名詞在英式英語(yǔ)中有prison的意思，不過(guò)是一種非正式的用法，例如 “ten years in the nick”（獄中十年）；nick作為動(dòng)詞在美式英語(yǔ)中還有“敲詐、宰客”的意思，例如 “They nicked me for just to have my hair cut.” （光給我剪發(fā)，他們就要了我30美元。）
