據(jù)報(bào)道，“9.11”事件幾個(gè)月后，美國(guó)總統(tǒng)布什曾秘密下令，允許國(guó)家安全局對(duì)境內(nèi)美國(guó)人和其他人的通信實(shí)施竊聽(tīng)，以尋找恐怖活動(dòng)的證據(jù)。12月18日，美國(guó)共和黨與民主黨議員日同聲要求國(guó)會(huì)對(duì)布什未經(jīng)法庭允許私自授權(quán)監(jiān)聽(tīng)國(guó)內(nèi)公民一事展開(kāi)調(diào)查。

報(bào)道中eavesdropping指的是"竊聽(tīng)"，它的動(dòng)詞形式即為eavesdrop，eavesdrop一詞是這樣得來(lái)的：eavesdrop→eaves(n. 屋檐)+drop(v. 落下)→身體自屋檐落下→偷聽(tīng)。
中國(guó)功夫里有一招“倒掛金鉤”偷聽(tīng)術(shù)，雙腳鉤住屋檐，頭沖下，耳貼窗，看來(lái)用eavesdrop來(lái)表示“偷聽(tīng)”倒是十分形象。
那么，這個(gè)倒掛金鉤的人，就被稱為eavesdropper，也就是“竊聽(tīng)者”。
