They were the quintessential Hollywood dream couple until their marriage ended in a shroud of questions and tabloid fodder.

Yet, this weekend, a series of wild wedding rumors led many to believe that Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston were once again preparing to tie the knot -- albeit not to each other.

First came word that Pitt was reportedly set to marry Oscar-winning actress -- and expectant mother of Pitt's child -- Angelina Jolie at a villa owned by actor and friend George Clooney in Laglio, Italy.

At the same time, fans were also buzzing about emerging reports of wedding plans for Brad's ex, Jennifer Aniston, who was said to be preparing for nuptials with her rumored main squeeze of late, Vince Vaughn, at Oprah Winfrey's estate near Santa Barbara, California.

Alas, for fans of Aniston or Pitt -- or of Vaughn or Jolie, for that matter -- the rumor mill scored a less-than-stellar 0-for-2 for the weekend.

The Associated Press reports that, although police and even the Mayor of Cernobbio were placed on heightened alert for major events that weekend, the only couple to marry in the Lake Como retreat over the weekend was an elderly Italian couple who tied the knot at City Hall.

Jolie and Pitt were nowhere to be found in the vicinity -- that is, of course, unless you count the men in 'drag' who called themselves 'Brad' and 'Angelina,' sharing a passionate kiss by the lake.

The mayor of Laglio also told AP that construction projects on Clooney's estate negated the possibility of a wedding at the site.

Nonetheless, the buzz surrounding a rumored Pitt-Jolie wedding might not have strictly been borne from grains of speculative salt. A hotel spokeswoman from Villa D'Este in Cernobbio, oft attended by entertainment elite, tells AP that agents for both stars had contacted the hotel a number of months ago, but she later went on to explain that "we don't know what happened. It ended in nothing."

As for Aniston and Vaughan, TMZ.com has investigated the rumors and believes them to be false, citing a photo of Winfrey boarding a jet to Maui, one that a source claims did not return to Santa Barbara, thereby lessening the chances that she helped to organize the couple's 'nuptials.' Further, TMZ adds that there were no sightings of the couple in the Santa Barbara area.

So, it appears that admirers of these reported celebrity supercouples would be well advised to hang onto that rice and place those wedding registry gifts back in the closet -- at least for now.
