Just My Luck is a fortune cookie of a movie, without the fortune: The outside looks sweet and tasty, the inside is hollow and dry.

The only attribute of this romantic comedy is it's cosmetically pleasing, thanks to a capable and predictably pretty cast headed by Lindsay Lohan and Chris Pine (The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement). But it's devoid of long-term value.

With a plot skinnier than Lohan's waist, the cosmic personality switcharoo attempts (and fails) to emulate the teen diva's hit Freaky Friday in 2003. As a moviegoer, you can't help but compare the two and notice the flaws. Lohan essentially plays the same "This can't be happening to me!" character, but this time there are no insightful karmic lessons or laugh-out-loud moments. Just My Luck's humor relies on sophomoric gags involving two (almost three) electrocutions, poop jokes and an overflowing washing machine.

Lohan plays Ashley Albright, a New York City public-relations office clerk whose good fortune clicks into high gear when she lands a promotion, a raise and access to Sarah Jessica Parker's party dress. Within hours, Ashley's fate flip-flops when she kisses a down-on-his-luck mystery man (Pine) at a masquerade party and their fortunes are reversed. She is canned and loses her apartment, he scores a gig with a record label and is handed a swanky penthouse. Thrown into the mix are a fortuneteller, a cutesy flirtation and the standard "big important rock concert" upon which everyone's future hinges.

If you don't mind the second-run story, Just My Luck is an innocuous Saturday afternoon time-passer for teens and fans who worship at the Lohan shrine. It's the last of her family-friendly pictures before she embarks on her journey to be an indie-film star, and it's too bad there wasn't a four-leaf clover around to make Just My Luck more memorable.
