Gates also presented a farewell video that took a self-deprecating swipe at the idea he would desperately cast about for a new career.
The video provoked plenty of laughter with cameo appearances by Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and other big names.
The outgoing Microsoft chairman highlighted how Microsoft is extending the reach of its software beyond desktops and servers, and incorporating alternative inputs like voice and touch.
