New archaeological discovery in Suzhou

A historic site of an ancient town, located in the southwestern part of Suzhou in East China's Jiangsu Province, was found last year. The announcement of this discovery was held on Tuesday in Suzhou.
Archeologists assume the site was once a large city that prospered during the Spring and Autumn Period.
In November 2009, Beijing and Suzhou archeologists teamed up to start research around the northeast area of Taihu Lake.
According to archeological data, the distance between the north and south city wall of this ancient town is about 6700 meters. The distance between the east and west wall is about 6800 meters. Its total area is about 25 square kilometers.
In the second half of 2010, archeologists found tombs belonging to nobles along with porcelain and jade of the Spring and Autumn Period. In Mudu county's village of Wufeng, archeologists also found tombs belonging to the Han, Ming and Qing dynasties.
This discovery has been considered as one of China's top 6 Archaeological discoveries in 2010. During 2011, archaeologists will continue to do detailed research about the ancient town including stone roads, waterways and workshops.
