The development of Pingtan in Fujian province's Fuzhou has raised widespread concern over Taiwan. The chamber of commerce and industry of Taiwan, social community, civic groups together with some more than 60 professionals and experts participated in the symposium for the development of Pingtan, Fuzhou, on March, 21.
Some representatives from the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State, the Chamber of Shipping across the Taiwan Strait, the Trade Union of the Taiwan Strait and experts from the Institute of Social Science and Technology of China, Tsinghua University and Fujian province were present at the meeting. The plan for the development of Pingtan has been fully deliberated by professionals from both sides.
Yu Guangzhou, the deputy secretary of Fujian province, visited the guests there. Chenhua, vice governor and member of the Standing Committee of Fujian, Xumang, managing director of the Economic Sector of the Taiwan Affair Office of the State delivered speeches at the symposium.
On behalf of the municipality, Chenhua extended his welcome to all the entrepreneurs and professionals. He attached great importance to the mutual interests across Taiwan Straits on the development of Pingtan. “We should devote ourselves fully to the commitment of providing beneficial and convenient conditions for trading and job hunting; making easy access for the communication across the Strait,” Chen said. “Pingtan should be rebuilt into a city, where it will be suitable for the Chinese across the Strait to live. However there is no existing mode to follow; we need the brains and power from both sides to find a new approach to cooperation.”
The professionals and experts participating in the symposium conducted field research in Pingtan. They also paid a visit to Pingtan cross-sea bridge, the beach project of southern Pingtan, the natural environment of Pingtan and learned about the relevant planning and construction of Pingtan's comprehensive experimental zone.
The scholars suggested that the development plan of Pingtan should be based on a higher level and have an emphasis on the protection of natural resources and the development of a low-carbon economy. Entrepreneurs from Taiwan and civic groups gave some specific ideas about the construction of Pingtan. Taiwan’s city planners have participated fully in the program of Pingtan’s development.
