I. Liangzhou Xianxiao

Declarer:Wuwei,Gansu province

Liangzhou Xianxiao is an ancient folk art of storytelling that prevails in Liangzhou, Gansu province, and its surrounding areas. According to the historical records, its history could be traced back to the late Yuan Dynasty(1271-1368) and the early Ming Dynasty(1369-1644).

In the past, Lianzhou Xianxiao singers were normally blind people, and the stories were about being virtuous and filial. Hence it got the name of "Xianxiao," literally "Virtuous and Filial." Liangzhou Xianxiao is usually performed by one player who sings, talks and plays the instrument.

With the development of the modern society, the audience of Liangzhou Xianxiao is decreasing gradually, with increasingly fewer performing places. It needs urgent supports and protection.

II. Hezhou Xianxiao

Declarer: Linxia, Gansu province

Hezhou Xianxiao is a traditional folk art of storytelling prevailing in Linxia, Gansu Province. It was formed in the late Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and the early Qing Dynasty(1644-1911). It's famous for its themes about justice, virtuous wives and filial children.

The programs are divided into two groups: one is "Guo Shu," which is about the rise and fall of the nation, and loyal soldiers as like San Guo Yan Yi; the other is "Jia Shu," which is about the daily life of the locals.

Although Hezhou Xianxiao has a long history, it is facing extinction because of the challenges form colorful modern cultural life, and needs urgent protection.
