Gansu province promotes new energy development

Gansu has led the nation in the expansion of solar photovoltaic and wind power capacities in 2014, said Liu Weiping, governor of the province.

The Northwest China's Gansu province's installed solar photovoltaic capacity reached 5.17 million kW and its wind power capacity reached 10.08 million kW, the nation's largest and the second largest, respectively, Liu said when he met Shu Yinbiao, manager of the State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) in Beijing, on March 4.

During the meeting, Liu said that since China's Twelfth Five-Year Plan was implemented, Gansu has reinforced its power grid construction and upgraded its urban and rural power grids. The upgraded power grids have promoted social stability and helped alleviate poverty in poverty-stricken areas.

Liu expressed that Gansu expects to receive the continual support of the SGCC. With the continued cooperation between the two entities, the province is bidding to get the state's approval of the Jiuquan Ultra High Voltage Direct Current (UHVDC) transmission project and to carry forward the Longdong UHVDC transmission project. It is hoped that such projects would transfer the province’s resource superiority into economic superiority and boost the development of the Longdong old revolutionary base areas.

Shu Yinbiao also noted his appreciation for the Gansu government's support with power grid construction projects while briefing Gansu officials on the SGCC's operations and projects. He said that SGCC will stick with Gansu’s new energy and power grid construction to contribute to the social development of Gansu province.

Gansu provincial vice-governor, Huang Qiang, and secretary-general of the provincial government, Zhang Shengzhen, were also present at the meeting.
