To promote the construction of a big data comprehensive pilot zone, senior officials from Guizhou province visited Silicon Valley, California, USA in 2016, hoping the preferential policies Southwest China provides and its abundant resources will help generate more collaboration and exchanges between Guizhou and San Francisco. The zone was established in Guiyang in 2016, and it was the only one of its kind approved by the central government to carry out research and development in big data.

Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada and Guiyang, China signed a friendship agreement on April 17, 2014. The Burnaby Council and Burnaby Artists Guild visited Guiyang and engaged in cultural exchange activities with local artists. The two cities expect to develop extensive cooperation in education, culture, tourism, trade, and environment protection.

A summer camp project to exchange students has played an important role in developing the friendship between two cities. In 2016, every June 14 to 16 were made as Sister City Day for Fort Worth and Guiyang.

Palmerston North, the seventh largest provincial city in New Zealand, signed a friendship agreement with Guiyang on August 17, 1992, becoming the first international sister city of Guiyang. Over the past 20 years, both cities have witnessed bilateral cooperation and exchanges in agriculture, education, tourism, trade, and technology, which have greatly promoted their mutual development.
